When Take One moved from one end of the town to the other in December 2008, customers Terry Ann and Jeffrey Black went down to the store, rolled up their sleeves and helped box up the merchandise. The Blacks are ardent supporters of local businesses so it was a typically helpful gesture on their part. Take One owners Jason Wood and Tony Ibrahim appreciate the support and goodwill of the Blacks and all their customers. "Tony and I bought the business specifically to keep an independent in the community," says Wood. "A lot of customers feel that way too." "If you don't support your local merchants, you lose them," reiterates Terry Ann Black. "We've gotten to know them (the owners) very well. They're fun to be around and have an interesting perspective on life." The partners admit that their lives revolve around the world of film. "We enjoy movies... writing, filming... every aspect of it all," says Wood. This passion is reflected in the way that they run their business, Take One, conveniently located on Mt. Diablo Boulevard in Lafayette, is basically an independent movie rental business that Wood and Ibrahim bought in the year 2000. The store was going out of business after 16 years, so it was quite a challenge for the partners to revive and revitalize it again. But they put their collective energies to work, revved up their customer service skills and, as Wood tells us, "We soon gained more business than the previous owners ever had!" Take One achieved this success by staying ahead of the game. The partners realized that DVDs were the future of the business and offered a choice of 3,000 DVDs, way ahead of the competition. Today their selection includes both DVDs and Blu-ray Discs. Take One was also the first to change its rental timeframe to 7 days and offered prepaid packages to help lower prices for customers.
